A description of the Lightning talk:
Interprofessional collaborative practice models of healthcare are required to best meet the complex needs of contemporary patients and clients. Allied health professionals are integral to these models, and are a unique group deserving of explicit focus because of the way they come from varied origins, comprise many professions, work in many groupings and have relatively flat hierarchical structures, as distinct to other heath professions. The importance of interprofessional collaborative practice models of healthcare in meeting the needs of contemporary patients and clients, alongside the unique characteristics of allied health professionals highlight a need to deeply and richly understand the notion of allied health collaborative practice capability and its development in both health professionals and students. This research illuminates nine key capabilities located in contextual, social and individual domains. Contextual capabilities comprise adaptability, responsiveness and persistence; social capabilities include friendliness, openness and reciprocity; and professional expertise, willingness and flexibility are integral individual capabilities. These capabilities are drawn on discretely or concurrently depending on the situation at hand, particularly important in navigating the challenges and complexities of contemporary healthcare settings and the patients and clients they serve. There are number of strategies key to the development of interprofessional collaborative practice capability.
A discussion of how Summit theme will be addressed:
This presentation resonates directly with the theme “Preparing Students for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice”. In order to adequately prepare students for IPCP, it is integral that we have a strong understanding of the nature of IPCP capability, and the unpinning capabilities that should be a focus in university for health students.
A description of how the Lightning Talk will provide knowledge to learners or describe outcomes that contribute toward better care, better value, and better education in practice and community settings:
This talk invites health professionals and educators to-
1. Reflect on the notion of interprofessional collaborative practice capability
2. Deepen understandings of how allied health professionals may draw on multiple capabilities for interprofessional collaborative practice
3. Enhance appreciation for how a more nuanced understanding of the plurality and coalescence of interprofessional collaborative practice capability may inform healthcare practice and education.
