Developing IPEC Interaction and Values Competencies in Nursing, Education, and Social Work Students with the Community Health Fair
Background
Interprofessional educational activities enhance collaboration, role comprehension, and quality of care. Developing interprofessional values and interpersonal skills is crucial for navigating healthcare challenges. However, understanding the roles and expertise of various professionals can be difficult (Zenani et al., 2023). Strengthening interprofessional knowledge and fostering sustainable working relationships improves patient outcomes and overall care quality (Isibel et al., 2018). Research shows that such activities significantly enhance attitudes, respect, and knowledge among health professionals (Saragih et al., 2024).
Design
An interdisciplinary service-learning health fair was conducted with undergraduate students in nursing, social work, and education (n=110) at a Midwestern university. Students worked in teams to develop health screenings, health education sessions, and STEM learning activities for homeschooled students ranging from PreK to 12th grade. Team members collaborated to integrate their respective professional expertise into these activities, refining their roles through both structured assignments and organic teamwork.
Methodology
Students completed the refined IPEC Competency Self-Assessment Tool before and after the project to measure the development of interprofessional values and interactions.
Results
Nursing (n=74), Education (n=17), and Social Work (n=20) students reported significant improvements in Interprofessional Values (Mean=-2.
