Experience as Expertise: Meaningful Engagement of People with Lived Experience Across Global Contexts

Friday, September 26, 2025, 10:00 am - 11:30 am CDT

This year’s closing plenary builds upon a recent special collection on lived experience and expertise from the British Medical Journal. Our two featured speakers were contributors to the special collection and will share the key principles, enablers, and recommendations that have been identified by a global community of lived experience advocates in advancing meaningful engagement of people living with NCDs, mental health, and neurological conditions. This presentation will also share real-world examples in meaningful engagement, from the publication of a BMJ Special Collection on lived experience as expertise, to the global convening of advocates to contribute to the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health in September 2025, to local experiences in addressing the challenges of obesity in Argentina and cancer care across the Middle East and North Africa.

Our featured speakers include:

  • Maia Olsen, a technical consultant with the World Health Organization and part of the codesign process of the 2023 WHO Framework for Meaningful Engagement of People Living with NCDs, Mental Health and Neurological Conditions, now supporting WHO, member state countries, and lived experience communities to implement these recommendations for equitable and inclusive participatory approaches to policy-making and health care delivery
  • Maria Anselmi, an endocrinologist, educator, and person with lived experience of obesity who has been at the intersection of interprofessional practice, education, and health care delivery throughout her career in Argentina.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the principles and enablers to enacting equitable and inclusive participatory approaches to policy-setting and program implementation in the WHO Framework for Meaningful Engagement
  • Identify similarities and differences in promoting meaningful engagement across global contexts and consider the relevance of these themes in interprofessional learning and practice locally
  • Discuss opportunities and barriers to embedding lived experience as expertise in academic publishing
  • Reflect on the institutional and personal shifts needed
