April D. Newton, PT, DPT, PhD, FNAP, is the Director of Interprofessional Practice Development of the Indiana University (IU) Interprofessional Practice and Education Center.
Dr. Newton develops and implements interprofessional education and collaborative practice curricula and co-curricular workshops, leading team-based care clinics at the IU Health Primary Care - Indianapolis Clinic, and the IU Student Outreach Clinic.
She is a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and an inaugural member of the American Interprofessional Healthcare Collaborative (AIHC). Her research interests include interprofessional education and collaborative practice and practice with marginalized populations.

Interprofessional education (IPE) has continued to grow within health profession education, with a primary goal of preparing learners to work collaboratively to meet the needs of patients, clients, families, and communities. Similarly, competency-based education (CBE) has become more prevalent among health profession programs with an emphasis on the demonstration of specific, observable abilities and competencies.
