Evan Sisson is a professor and certified diabetes care and education specialist at VCU School of Pharmacy where he teaches pharmacy, nursing and medical students about drug therapy for hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. In the VCU Health interprofessional NP/PharmD Complex Diabetes clinic, Dr. Sisson provides direct patient care and co-manages drug therapy under a collaborative practice agreement with a nurse practitioner and university endocrinologists. In addition to direct patient care, Dr. Sisson also provides pharmacist leadership as the Assistant Director of the Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation and Department Vice-chair for Practice and Service.

The 2025 ADA Standards of Care state that, “People with diabetes can benefit from a coordinated interprofessional team that may include but is not limited to diabetes care and education specialists, primary care and subspecialty clinicians, nurses, registered dietitian nutritionists, exercise specialists, pharmacists, dentists, podiatrists, and behavioral health professionals.” The rising prevalence of diabetes coupled with the predicted shortfall of endocrinologists increases the need to develop new diabetes care models.
