Dr. Krista Estes is an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Master’s Programs at the University of Colorado College of Nursing. She previously served as Division Chair of Adult Health and Wellness and Family Nurse Practitioner Specialty Director. She also supports interprofessional collaboration as Assistant Director for the CU Anschutz Interprofessional Practice and Education Council.
Dr. Estes holds a BS in Kinesiology from Kansas State University and earned her BSN, MSN (FNP), and DNP from the University of Kansas. Clinically, she has served as an FNP in urgent and emergent care settings, including Kaiser Urgent Care and large emergency departments in Kansas City. She is certified by the AANP and the FMCSA as a Certified Medical Examiner and holds full prescriptive authority in Colorado.
A nationally recognized educator, Dr. Estes received the CU College of Nursing Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her scholarship spans simulation, telehealth, curriculum innovation, and interprofessional education. She serves on national committees, including as Co-Chair of the Awards Committee for the National Association of Family Nurse Practitioners and Faculty Institute Committee Member for NONPF. Dr. Estes also lends her expertise to a nonprofit focused on clinician competence and assessment.
In all her roles—as educator, clinician, and leader—Dr. Estes is dedicated to advancing nursing education and improving healthcare outcomes.

Person-centeredness is essential to holistic health care and requires collaboration of healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. The University of Colorado (CU) delivers a one-credit Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) course for 650 first-year students from dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, and physical therapy programs.
