Description of the Lightning Talk: This Lightning Talk will describe how facilitators are trained for roles in the UW Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (UW CIPE) Healthy Aging Initiative (HAI) to enhance collaborative practice among healthcare learners. The HAI prepares learners for real-world interprofessional collaboration by delivering three virtual programs focused on developing interprofessional competencies in learners, specifically in the context of healthy aging. This Talk will highlight best practice training methodologies and the role of facilitation in fostering high quality interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPCP).

Discussion of How the Summit Theme Will Be Addressed: The training of IP facilitators directly aligns with the summit theme by preparing learners for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). The HAI emphasizes the importance of teamwork among future healthcare professionals, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary to work effectively in interprofessional settings. By focusing on people living with dementia (PLwD) and their caregivers, this initiative addresses a critical area of healthcare that requires coordinated efforts from various disciplines, thereby reinforcing the value of IPCP.

Description of How the Lightning Talk Will Provide Knowledge to Learners or Describe Outcomes: The Lightning Talk will provide attendees with insights into best practices in training of interprofessional facilitators and cover the following:

Training: Innovative approaches used to virtually train interprofessional facilitators who have the potential to facilitate other interprofessional learning activities.

Outcomes: The impact of strong interprofessional facilitation skills on learner learning, assistance in improving learner interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking, and team building skills. Specific outcomes include enhanced interprofessional communication skills, better understanding of aging-related health issues, and improved patient care practices.

Description of How the Lightning Talk Fulfills the Priority Criteria/Project Outcomes: The Healthy Aging Initiative fulfills the priority criteria by achieving several key outcomes:

Learning Outcomes: Learners gain comprehensive knowledge and skills in interprofessional collaboration and brain health across the lifespan when working with caregivers of PLwD.

Improved Health Equity: The initiative promotes equitable healthcare practices by addressing the unique needs of aging populations.

Engagement of Patients and Communities: Facilitators are trained to involve all learners and community partners in the learning process, ensuring practical and relevant education.

Sustainable Academic-Community Partnership: The initiative fosters long-term collaboration between faculty and community members, ensuring ongoing benefits for learners and communities.
