Co-curricular interprofessional engagement provides a unique informal space for future health professionals to find and make authentic connections with one another, build leadership skills through experimentation and innovation, and shape their educational experiences. Well designed and supported initiatives and spaces can both enhance student wellbeing and meet interprofessional education goals.

For 50 years, the Center for Health Interprofessional Programs (CHIP) at the University of Minnesota has been supporting students across health professions to “do what matters to them, outside of the classroom, across professions.” CHIP’s origins in grassroots student organizing and advocacy have shaped its values and led to the development of opportunities for interprofessional engagement that are dynamic, accessible and resonant in a way that is distinct from the opportunities in a curricular setting.

In this Lightning Talk, CHIP staff will share their results from a multi-phase evaluation project. The first phase utilized a survey to collect feedback from health professional students about what makes co-curricular interprofessional programming and spaces relevant, welcoming, and accessible. The second phase used focus groups with health professional student leaders to reveal the impact of student organization leadership on their sense of belonging, relationship building, peer education opportunities, advocacy work, leadership development, and IPEC Competencies. Evaluation results will inspire thoughtful reflection about current co-curricular programming and spaces on participant campuses, prompting attendees to think creatively about how to expand the breadth and depth of these experiences and meet the specific needs and interests of health science students.

After attending this session, participants will be challenged to: a) identify strengths and areas for improvement to make co-curricular programming and spaces more welcoming, accessible, and inclusive; b) assess, emphasize, and apply best practices to the most impactful areas of space design and program implementation; c) consider how co-curricular engagement can fulfill IPE goals and IPEC competencies.
